Nelumbo NuciferaBy: Cristina Slough
5 out of 5 stars
The story Nelumbo Nucifera by Cristina Slough is a thrilling/suspense book. This is a powerful story about domestic abuse and the lengths one woman has to go to in order to stay alive. It is told from the POV of Gaby Parker, her husband Kyle, and the female detective that is assigned to find out what has happened to Gaby. It is a story that had me on the edge of my seat during many scenes and also always hoping that Gaby will be able to lead a happy life free of the fear that was always a constant in her marriage. It is so heartbreaking to read about what Gaby has gone through and even though she has taken steps to leave Kyle she still is plagued by nightmares. She has set a plan in motion that will have her starting a new life with a new name. This involves making everyone believe she is dead. Will the plan work? Kyle is a man that wants total control. He is someone who is not used to hearing the word no and uses his wealth to get what he wants. He is angered that his reputation is being tarnished during the investigation into what has happened to Gaby. He believes that Gaby is still alive and sets out to prove it any way he can. Is it possible that he will find her? The detective that is assigned to find out what has happened to Gaby is someone who is determined to be the one to get justice for the abused. The past is a large part of why she does this. She is certain that Kyle is the guilty party in his wife’s death and goes about gathering evidence to prove it. While the story is suspenseful it also has a softer side. Gaby finds that there is a couple that is supportive of her and also a man that she finds herself beginning to have feelings for. This is an author that has done a wonderful job writing a book on a very sensitive subject. This is the first book that I have read by her and it will not be the last. As this book does have scenes that are disturbing and also contains possible triggers I would recommend this book for those 18 years of age or older.

Nelumbo Nucifera Cristina Slough Jessica Sims Danni Ellie Williams Murphy Rae 9780995549487 Books Reviews
Nelumbo Nucifera by Cristina Slough. This book had my head doing a few twists for sure. I’m a huge fan of women making it out of bad situations and this book didn’t disappoint in any way. From page one you find yourself drawn into a twisted and dangerous world that the main character Gaby lives in. I couldn’t help but feel for her and root for her, her character is so well written I forgot I was reading a book. Each chapter is told in different POV’s which I’m always a fan of because you just get a more rounded view, however this also added to the twists I felt myself going through! I felt at points that I had the whole story figured out but then that thought is poof gone when we get a different POV! This author has an amazing ability to keep you guessing while you fall in love with her characters. This book is everything you’re looking for in a thriller type book. I was completely captured from the first page. I give this book a five star review for being everything I was looking for when I read the Blurb. Can’t wait to see where else this author takes her readers.
I am going to try and write this review without giving to much away any spoilers. This book will pull at so many emotions.
We meet Gaby Parker who to the outside world has everything and more but behind closed its a whole different ballgame as when Gaby takes her make up off all she sees staring back at her is a broken woman who she lives in fear of and has caused the bruises that she uses her make up to hide.
Her husband Kyle is meant to be the one person that Gaby can turn to,to love and protect her yet instead Gaby is living in fear as to when her husband will strike next as he's nothing like people think that he is. He's a abusive man who thinks he's the big man to beat his wife.
Gaby realizes that the only way that she's ever going to be free from this thug is to kill herself well on paper not that Kyle will know any different as far as he is concerned his wife is dead. Gaby reinvents herself and changes her name to Riley Locklin at starts rebuilding her life in a quiet coastal town. It's here that Gaby/Riley meets someone that shows her what being happy means.
Kyle doesn't believe for one minute that his wife could do this so starts his own investigation and is going to do whatever it takes to bring his wife home.
What happens if he finds out that his wife alive and well?
A must read
Pretty good read. Although it was a lot like Sleeping With the Enemy, I still enjoyed it. Would probably have given it five stars except for all the misspellings. I found it distracting, but that’s how I am, a stickler for spelling and grammar.
I enjoyed it. Knew pretty much what was going to happen but still a good read. Moved at a good pace. Happy ending.
This story was so well written you could feel the fear of the main character. She struggled to save herself. It compared to the movie Sleeping With the Enemy. Reading it you will feel fear and anger. It was very well-written.
Abuse steals your identity, your dreams, yourself. Power and wealth of her husband abuser kept her frightened, silently pretending she had a comfortable marriage. Escaping left her free but fearful her husband might find and kill her. Gate intervened, Ben saved her life. Prison is the new home for the abuser.
I often see people dinging a book simply because of typos. This one has quite a few, but it did not detract from a good fast-paced story. Hang lived the life we all would certainly dream about. Her beautiful, charmed existence was marred only by the fact that her husband feels it his duty to teach her with beatings, drugs and breaking her spirit. When Gaby decided to fake her death and flee to a small coastal town, she rediscovered herself. But, is her abusive husband going to figure it all out and come after her?
